I really had such high expectations for this book because I loved The Princess and the Hound so much, but it fell flat on it's face for me. The switch over from human to hound and back again brought up too many unanswered and uncomfortable questions for me. The whole story felt like it was going somewhere, but the writing was confusing and choppy. It felt, to me, as though it were a first rough draft instead of a final product. I did enjoy the interaction and description of the many animals, but wished there had been more depth to their story.

The king and the hound had too many differences and too many unsolved issues to truly work, and I felt as if the ending was abruptly forced.

I do hate giving bad book reviews, but I really was very disappointed. I finished the book with a desperate feeling of unresolved confusion.

This was definitely geared toward younger readers, but I still enjoyed the story. It was unique and different which was a wonderful surprise. I loved the idea of savvy and wanted to read more and more about the different savvy's. I also really enjoyed the sweet story happening between the traveling pink bible salesman and the big hearted waitress. I am passing it on to my 10 year old daughter who will love it!

This was a surprising read. My emotions were high as I read about Meg's struggle and acceptance of her rapidly deteriorating situation. I felt compassion for her and cheered her on as different things happened in her life. I really enjoyed the story line involving music, but I was highly disappointed that there wasn't more. It was barely mentioned and I wanted more, more, more of the music. It was definitely a great, feel good read.

I really enjoy distopian literature, and knew I would most likely love this book before I even started it. It was not disappointing in the least, and I loved the blossoming of the main character, and the forbidden, but unstoppable flowering romance happening amidst the confusion and fear surrounding the surprising situations at every turn. I can't wait to read the second book.

I do enjoy fantasy books, but the reason that I don't pick them up that often is that they tie you down for weeks and months and even years at a time. I knew what I was getting into by beginning the Wheel of Time series. I had discussed it with multiple people who have read the series and highly recommended it. I also have had this book on my shelf for about 3 years now. It was time.

As typical with a lot of fantasy series, there is a lot of information to digest about the fantasy world, the amazing string of characters, and the plots and subplots and subplots going on. It actually turned out to be much lighter than I was expecting. It is very well written, and easy to get lost in the story. The history is fascinating and each character is complex and very interesting.

The only complaint I have is of one of the leading characters. I can not stand Mat and every time he is mentioned in the book, I cringe and hurry on to the next part. If this is what the author intended, he did a great job!! I'm already well into the second book, and am loving the story. I hope it doesn't take me years to finish this series.

I loved the light romance developing throughout the book. It really was a breath of fresh air to read, and I kept a smile on my face for days afterward remembering the sweet story.

I really connected with this book. It takes place during the depression era in a small town. The struggle of the main character was powerful and raw. It really made me appreciate how much I have been blessed with. I was in shock and awe while reading about how little people had during the depression. We are such a spoiled generation. Even the "poor" are not poor by depression era definition. Not only was it fascinating to read, but the story felt real and honest. I admire the way the author was able to portray the main characters faults and weaknesses and relate it personally to all of us.

I picked this up on a whim at the bookmobile. I'm so glad I didn't buy it because I would be having serious buyers remorse. I really, really liked the idea of the story. And I love reading anything about pioneers crossing the wilderness to the Salt Lake Valley, but the writing itself was quite atrocious. The wording, the paragraphs, the sentences, all felt to me, like they were written by a 12 year old. The writing was just so rough. I kept thinking to myself, if it's this bad, I wonder what the first draft was like. But it did give me hope that one day I can be published. If something this bad got published, than I can hold out hope for me. It really was hard to read just because it had no flow and the sentences were mostly awkward. It had a great storyline though.... you just had to get past the writing.

The Well of Ascension (Mistborn book Two) by Brandon Sanderson

The only problem I had with this book is that it took about 100 pages to get really interesting. So I can imagine that many people must have given up before getting through the first 100 pages. This is unfortunate because the story bursts into high tension and explosive fight after fight in the second half of the book. The many subplots flowing between the story of Elend and Vin enhanced and cemented the books greatness. The underlying message that good is right, no matter what, from Elend sat strongly with me, and I admired the author for sticking to his morals admist a fantasy story that could have become sordid and filthy. He has so much more to offer and for me, this is what sealed the deal. I am loving this Mistborn series and can't wait to get my hands on the third book. It's a definite must read for fantasy lovers, and for anyone searching for a good book to suck you in, chew you up, and spit you out. Enjoy the ride!

Goals for a Book Junkie

I had a goal last year to read 100 books. I did well at the beginning of the year, but then fell behind and could never catch up. The website Goodreads has an excellent little book tracker (as you can see on the right) if you are interested in setting a goal for yourself. Make sure to Friend Me on Goodreads if you sign up. Love that site! And it's free, of course.

So, my goal was 100 books in the year of 2011. I didn't quite make my goal. I managed to read 91 books, but I feel that is a great number. In December I was scrounging for shorter novels in hopes of finishing the goal of 100, but I was just too far behind.

This year I have a different type of goal in mind. I want to read books that I WANT to read... not ones that I think I should be reading or ones that I don't want to but am reading anyway because they were on my bookshelf and I feel guilty about not reading them.

So, first up, Read a total of 85 books.

Second, Read the books that I want to read.

Third, Read at least 3 classics.

Fourth, Write better reviews (more thought out and not so rushed) on my book blog.

Fitfh, Read at least one Religious book per month. This has to be non fiction and a book that makes me study, think, and ponder.

Sixth, Read with my children more, and finish the Harry Potter series with Maddy. (We are halfway through Book 5, The Order of the Phoenix.

I'm excited for these goals. Reading is important to me, and I decided a long time ago to move it up my priority list. Instead of watching TV, I read. Instead of playing on the computer, I read. I MAKE time to read.

For someone who doesn't read romance novels, I sure have been doing a lot of it lately. I have to admit that Barbara Cartland is the master of Historical Romance. She describes the Regency era completely accurate and amazingly detailed. I am always impressed with her Historical knowledge. This was a fun little read that did exactly what it was intended to do. It made me slightly giddy and left a feel good feeling in my heart as the hero and heroine lived out their happily ever after. Perfect romance? I think so!

I believe I read this in Junior High because it felt vaguely familiar as I was reading it. It was a Newberry Award Honor Book and well deserved. I have always, always, always loved Native American stories. I connect with them intimately and emotionally. This story takes place during the period surrounding The Long Walk; the 300 mile journey the Navajos were forced into. It is a bitter story with many emotional feelings, but it is necessary and I feel everyone should read stories like this about our Untied States History. I am passing it to my daughter to read now. It is a short book and only took a few hours to read, but it was well worth it.

Expecting something completely different, I was taken by surprise by this book. My heart ached for the main character the entire time. I wanted to fix her life. I wanted to make it better. I wanted to at least talk some sense into some of her ghosts. Because the author was witty and comical throughout the book, it masked the raw, painful emotion that was hiding beneath. It really made me sit and ponder after finishing it. And I love it when books do that. It was something different than I was expecting, and something different than I normally read, but I was not disappointed in the least. I am still left thinking and pondering it 2 weeks after I finished it.

Cute, cute, cute!!! I loved how cute this book was. It was such a fun read. The author is very witty and had me laughing all through the book. The whole time I was reading this book, I had that warm, hot chocolatey feeling. I was a little lost and skeptical over the throwing in the "santa is real" thing at the last minute, but other than that, it was a wonderful read and such a treat.

I am going to be implementing some of her many tips and suggestions into this upcoming year, and I hope to have the same type of success she had. Loved it!

I needed a fun book to read while I de-stressed from one of the craziest weeks in my life, and since it was the Christmas season, this fit the bill perfectly. Sometimes my sister sends me romances since it's not normally a genre I read, and this must have been one since it's been on my bookshelf untouched for years. There are 4 short stories included in the book written by 4 different romance authors. The first three were absolutely delightful. And the fourth was surprisingly deep and emotional for me. I loved them all. Story number four, titled, Maybe This Christmas was a total surprise. I started reading it and thought to myself that the writing was choppy and perhaps I wouldn't finish it, but I read on and am so glad I did. It was a wonderful story and perfect for Christmas and the New Year. Not normally a romance fan, I am surprised I enjoyed these so much. It's definitely for the adult crowd as all four have mentions of sex.

Book Two in The Mortal Instruments series proved to be predictable, irritating, and a flop for me. I was bored with the plot by page 10, but because I had enjoyed the first book, I pushed through. Whenever I have to "push through" a book, it's a sign to me that it's undeserving to be finished... but I have a problem with not finishing books, so I finished it. It did get semi-interesting in parts throughout the book, but as a whole I found it very disappointing. I'm not sure how the rest of the series is going to continue... and I'm not sure I even want to finish the series. I'm definitely not buying it, that's for sure. I would say to save your money and time, and read a really good series like The Bayern Books by Shannon Hale or Paranormalcy by Kiersten White.

The reason I liked this book so much was because it showed the flaws of human nature so specifically in the main character. Sarah was a bitter, bitter woman because of events surrounding her divorce and ex husband and she held onto these bitter emotions until they grew and consumed her. She was then affected at every turn by these bitter emotions. It was so raw and emotional, and I wanted to scream at her to "LET IT GO!". But just as in real life, she had to learn it herself... no matter how much coaxing and persuading a person does on your behalf, it does no good until you, yourself are ready to change. This story proved that point perfectly. By the end of the book, I was emotionally exhausted and wanted something great to happen for Sarah. But just as in real life, she had to make the greatness happen and by the time she realized she needed to change and could change, she had already wasted 20 years of her life. It was definitely a great read, and made me analyze my own life and relationships afterward.

Torey Hayden is an educational psychologist and a former special education teacher who, since 1979, has chronicled her struggles in the classroom. I have always been interested and fascinated by this genre. For quite awhile in college, I was convinced that I was going to become a child psychologist specializing in abuse, so I read and studied a lot about it. It has never lost it's appeal to me, and I like to read the occasional true story that chronicles the relationship between the damaged and abused child and the child psychologist who is determined to help. It is inspiring and fulfilling. Torey Hayden is perhaps my favorite author of this genre. She tells such a straightforward story, but is full of emotion and learning. Ghost Girl was no exception. I am glad I took the time to read it and be affected by the powerful and emotional story within it.

It has the beginnings of a good story line, but it was just too juvenile for me. However, I think it is very appropriate for it's intended audience, the Young Readers. I would love to see my daughters reading this series.

Well, I absolutely loved the first 3 books of this series, but my complaint is that it takes the author so looooooong to get out the next book. The first book was published in 1998 and the 4th book, Blackveil, just came out in 2011. That is way too long. I do love the characters and the story line though. I will wait and wait for as long as it takes Kristen Britain to come out with the next.

Blackveil delved a little more into Karigan and the King's relationship and it was killer to watch them tiptoe around each other. I want them to end up together so badly, but I don't see any way that it can be resolved... which I absolutely hate. The way this relationship goes could totally elevate or kill the entire series. Of course, I'm intrigued by the Eletians and am anxious to read more about them. The author did a cliffhanger ending which I absolutely despise. It wouldn't be so bad if I knew the next book was coming out in 2012, but I know it will be 3 to 4 years before the next book and it is very irritating. Throughout the book, I kept thinking that I didn't like Blackveil as much as the other books in the series, but apparently I did because the ending drives me so nuts. If I didn't love the book, then I wouldn't really care.

I just hope the author hurries up with the next book! I need to know what's happening!

I have no idea why I loved this book so much, but I really really did. Tears came to my eyes at least a dozen times throughout the book. It was so poignant and honest in the feelings and emotions presented. I could feel the hurt and pain, and wanted to reach out and do what I could to make the situation better. This book felt so real to me, and that for me is what blasts a book out of the park. I feel like I know Aubrey and grams and Lissie and I want to call them on the phone to check up on them. It was superbly written, and I gobbled it up in only a few hours.

A great love and tragedy story that pulls you in and little by little attaches you to the main characters so that by the end, it feels so real, and not like a book at all. The author has a wonderful way of weaving the story line throughout the characters. My heart was pulled so many ways with it, and by the end I had no idea how the author was going to absolve all of the anxiety. I didn't suspect the ending at all and it really threw me for a loop. At first I hated it, but after mulling it over for a few days, I realized how perfect it was.

I've always enjoyed Historical Romance. Usually a historical romance novel will have a lot more to the story than just ridiculous harlequin type stuff. And this book proved true. There was so much background, so much building of the story, and a lot of interesting side stories going on also. I enjoyed the idea of the plot, but found myself losing interest toward the end. I think it could have been shortened quite a bit and still kept a great story. It is a fairly large book that took a bit of time to digest. The descriptions were wonderful, and I really enjoyed the French and Italian words and traditions built in.

I was so excited for this book. I first saw it at Barnes & Noble, but decided to research reviews first before impulsively buying it. I came home and read a mix of awful and good reviews. So I put it on my wish list on paperbackswap.com and when it became available, I ordered it. The book started out very good. I was pulled into the story and wanted to read it through in one sitting... but then the absolutely worst thing happened... it started to become more and more similar to The Lord of the Flies... my absolute LEAST favorite book in the world. I was disappointed with the character building, definitely not enough of it. I was disappointed with the total loss of humanity and hope. It could have been so much better. But, I will probably still read the second book... just to find out what happens with the zombies.

I enjoyed all of the science background and explanation of what is happening inside the body when we eat. The information was a little dated, but still relevant. I recommend this one to everyone living in the U.S. and eating a western diet.

This was a spin off of the fairy tale Rumplestiltskin. I absolutely love fairy tale retellings and spin offs... It's definitely one of my favorite things to read. I've always found the story of Rumplestiltskin creepy and this was a perfect story to work off that creepiness. It was a quick moving story which at first I thought I wouldn't like, but it worked out perfectly in the end. I stayed up late one night to finish it, and I was very spooked towards the end. I don't usually get that way with books, but this one had me on pins and needles, and I jumped about a foot when my husband reached over to hold my hand.

It was a great story and a brilliant spinoff of a fairy tale.

To balance out all of the young adult fiction I read, I try to have informational and classic works in my stack also. I was anxious to read this book because it is an important subject to me, and I also was very interested in the information and subject matter presented. Because of the sheer amount of knowledge and resources this book presents, I had to read it in chunks. It is a short book, but there is so much information crammed in, I had to take small breaks from time to time to digest everything I had read.
My experience with this book was that it was a reiteration of things I already believed but now had facts to back them up. I was glad that the book wasn't packed with rhetoric and things I couldn't understand. It turned out to be a logical delineation of cultural trends, Islam, Radical Islam, and our response to the terrorism that reaches America. There were many great sources cited as well as a lot of informative quotes from well known public figures. I did not question the credibility because of the excellent source of references and quotes.I really liked that this book was not slamming or trying to belittle anyone or anything. It removed the emotional opinions and rhetoric on both sides of the issues it addressed and spoke simply of the truth of the matter. I am so pleased that I read this book and only wish everyone in America could read it and be affected as positively as I was.

This was such a cute and witty love story. Julie Wrights' wittiness and clever wording always draw me in. I have a thing for the clever and witty. It's what bumps up a book for me between good and great. I found myself chuckling and full on laughing out loud in many parts of the book. My husband kept glancing over at me to make sure everything was okay while I was reading late in my bed one night. I was just enjoying a really great book. I'm not really a romance reader besides the occasional one that my sister makes me read, but as far as romance goes this didn't really feel strictly romance. It was cute and witty and clever and just a really fun read.

Although the writing was choppy and confusing at times, I loved the story line so much that I had to finish the book. This was definitely not one of Jennie Hansen's best books only because of problems with the writing. I wish she could have refined the writing itself a little bit more and it could have been phenomenal. I absolutely love stories that take place in the old west. The early life of the west has always intrigued me. In fact, several times while reading this book, I had to flip to the main cover and make sure it was Jennie Hansen and not Louis L'Amour. The similarities in the writing and story of this book and a classic Louis L'Amour were remarkable. However, there was too much going on in the story without enough explanation or description. I do have to have to give a 6 though because I although I loved the idea of the story and the strength of the main characters, it was too choppy and sporadic.

When The Uglies trilogy came out, I inhaled it like candy. I really enjoyed the first and second books, but was slightly disappointed in the 3rd. So when I saw that there was a 4th book, I wasn't in any rush to go out and buy it. As the months passed, I slowly forgot about it, until one day I happened to be perusing a used book store and I spied it on the shelf for $2.00. Of course, I snatched it up... and then it sat in my "to read" pile at home for months and months.

Last week, I grabbed it off the shelf as I was headed out the door because I knew I would have some down time to read at my daughters soccer practice. And then, I was hooked.

Extras was so fascinating and interesting. I loved that Tally was tied in with the plot. I also loved the extreme tech life of the city described in the Extras. It reminded me exactly of Facebook and Twitter and how people are popular based on their rank... (how many people follow your Twitter or blog? How many friends do you have on Facebook?) It seems pretty ridiculous in the book that people can buy into that, and yet it's similar to what we have today.

I'm glad that I picked it up and decided to read the 4th book in The Uglies series. It was a pleasant surprise.

I had no idea what to expect when I found this book at my local thrift store. All I knew about the book was that it was famous enough for me to have heard the title a lot and I had heard good reviews. That was good enough for me to spend the 75 cents on.

I really enjoyed the idea of the story and that we are all connected. It really made me ponder on what people I have come in contact with in my life and if I have had any long term or even short term effects on their lives. I must admit that I did get a bit emotional towards the end, but it was a good thing. I like it when books can influence my emotions to a point where I shed a few tears. I would definitely recommend reading this book. It made me think about things long after I read the last page.

This was a great young adult novel full of the angst and drama of teenage years. The main character dealt with the problems facing her in much the way I would have as a teenager, and in much the same way as many teens today. It was insightful to hurt and change and had a great lesson mixed in with the plot. It would make a perfect gift for a teenager. I really enjoyed the wit and humor. The way that the main character finally faced her issues and dug into the problems at hand were expertly written, and pulled at the strings of my heart. I only wish the book had had more depth and the story lasted a bit longer.

Yes, yes, I know Louis L'Amour and all of the stereotypes there, but it's in my blood. In fact, my 94 year old granny, my dad, my brothers and sisters, my aunts and uncles, my cousins... they have all read about ever Louis L'Amour out there and can flip to the good parts of any book by just hearing the title. So as cliche as it is, I have to be a Louis L'Amour fan... it's in my blood.

Now as far as his writing, it falls a little short on most of his books for me. There is always an excellent story, and some very good descriptions, but the writing is usually choppy and needs a better flow.

I loved the idea of this book. The multiple sub stories going on really drew my attention in. I needed more from it though, and felt disappointed at the end. The notes tied to tumbleweeds were a great idea, but the actual notes themselves needed desperate help. I think that part could have been a lot better. But of course, the hero in the book was classic Louis L'Amour... You just can't help but love the hardened, lonely, tough, western cowboy.

I've always loved historical fiction more than any other genre. It is so awe inspiring to read about history in a unique and interesting way. The way that Hattie was able to survive and persevere despite being only 16 and on her own was inspiring and motivating. I've always been old fashioned and very work oriented and that is why I loved the book so much. I believe that the value of hard work has been lost on most of todays youth and it saddens me. I grew up on a farm working very hard, and the lessons I learned are irreplaceable. I am trying to instill the same work ethic in my own children. Even though it took place only 100 years ago, so much has changed. It seems like a whole new world we live in. I also found the World War 1 era fascinating and almost unbelievable. People went with sugar, wheat, gasoline.... on and on and on to support the war. It's absolutely amazing to me how times have changed in such a short time. I loved this book for it's historical aspect and for the charming, heart wrenching, motivational story of Hattie. What a wonderful heroine.

Being a teenage girl is hard enough in normal circumstances. When family problems and deeper hurts are experienced, it can be absolutely unbearable, which is exactly what the author described. I hope the teenagers out there that are reading this actually gain knowledge and understanding instead of mocking and scoffing. What great insight to that tender age.

Although this book did take me a little while to get into it, I really enjoyed the story. I felt like the first 3/4 of the book was a lot of building the characters and the story and so it felt a little long and drawn out, but the last 1/4 of the book was an explosion of action and suspense. I am excited to read the other 2 books in this trilogy.

I have quite a few of Julie Wright's books on my to read list, but hadn't acquired any yet. On our way home from a fun filled Memorial Day Weekend we stopped at a little Country gas station and there was a bunch of LDS books, with a lot of Julie Wright's mixed in. I decided it was the perfect time to pick one up, and much to my surprise the author's husband owned the gas station. He made a quick call and Julie Wright came and signed my book. What an awesome surprise!

I finished this book in 2 days. It was so so good. I loved everything about it. The transition from unhappy, bad decisions to a happy, good life was smooth and wonderful. It made me laugh, cry, and ponder... all the things that a great book should do. Another great summer read!

I was slightly turned off by the hippie content, but the main character was very likable, and the story line became more intriguing and alluring with each page. The twists and turns were full of suspense, and I loved the little Love Triangle going on. Of course the boy dilemma was completely obvious, but in a cute way. This was a fun read... perfect for the lazy days of summer.

When I first started this book, I immediately thought of The Lord of the Flies. Ever since I was a junior in high school and forced to read it, I have absolutely despised the book. I tried it again after I matured a little (ha!), and I just didn't enjoy it at all... there are some books out there that no matter how good of reviews it gets, you will never like it... and that is the way The Lord of the Flies is for me. I'll always hate it.

Now, back to The Maze Runner.... at the beginning, I kept thinking, "Oh NO... not another Lord of the Flies", but because of some great reviews I pushed through. And I'm so glad I did, because I ended up really liking the book, and want to read the sequel.

It is intense with a lot of deep, emotional, questions to ponder about humanity, but I did like it.

This was my book club book for May. I don't think I would have ever picked it up otherwise. That's the beauty of a bookclub! I actually really enjoyed reading it. It was fascinating. Weeks after reading it, I'm still analyzing people wondering what kind of childhoods they had. ha, ha I also was able to really look into some of my own "issues" and come up with an interesting explanation. I definitely recommend this book... although most of the stories are so tragic and depressing. Make sure you have an uplifting book to read afterwards.

I really liked the story of this book, but the historical aspect was not as rich and insightful as In the Company of Angels which tells of the same historical event. I know the author really tried to stick with the actual facts in this book, which I appreciated, but to me it felt like the horror and despair of the real story was blurred and made to feel much less intense than it actually was. In the story, In The Company Of Angels, I cried and cried for many chapters because of the intensity. And although this was the same exact story, it did not draw tears from me. However, I thought this historical account was very well written and wonderfully told. It stuck with me for weeks afterward.

All four of these books have spoken to my heart. I love the fairy tale writing. In Forest Born, I was immediately drawn in by the simple like of the forest people. I loved Rinna and I was seriously upset with her struggle. I wanted to go inside the book and help her out. I wish more than anything that Shannon Hale would continue with these beautiful stories. Here is another perfect example of a book that the cover completely discouraged me from reading it for a long time. It just turns me off. I don't like the cover at all. But I was happy to discover that I did enjoy the book quite a bit. It is another super natural series full of vampires, faeries, and all kind of ghoulish creatures. The main character was a bit annoying to me, but I noticed it was a bit more "teenagerish" than a lot of the young adult novels I read. I find that if it's written as just a young adult genre and the author has no intention of adults liking it too, than I don't enjoy it quite as much. It reminded me quite a bit of Paranormalcy in the way it was written. It was a fun and quick read although I did have a few small problems with a couple of things thrown in there.

This is the second book to Traitor and continues the story of Rolf and Marie. But it also puts 2 new characters into the limelight and this book is mostly about Hans and Natalie. I really like that my old, familiar characters are in it and play a part, but the main story and plot revolves around a new and intriguing character. This book explores post World War II and it is absolutely fascinating. I have to admit that I do not know a lot about what happened after the war. I have read and studied World War II extensively, but never thought to study post war. I really enjoyed learning more about the situation and like always it made me extremely grateful for those men and women who sacrificed all that they had and even themselves for their country. It's a great sequel to the first book.

The idea of this book is phenomenal, but I had a problem with the way it was presented. To me it seemed like the authors were more concerned about showing off the celebrities they know, than about the content matter. I didn't like that they were repeatedly going back to these celebrities stories. I am not interested in the celebrities stories. I'm more interested in the normal, every day couples who have tried the 40 day prayer challenge and succeeded.

There were, however, some very insightful and helpful suggestions and wonderful stories. I do very much like the basis of the book, a prayer challenge for couples. I only wish the authors would have left off all the fluff and celebrity stories. I think it soiled the good content and felt incredibly fake. I almost couldn't take the book seriously after reading the first couple of chapters. It was awkward; it was uncomfortable, and most of all it didn't hold my attention. The only reason I read to the end and finished the book because I made a commitment to Book Sneeze to do an honest review. I was highly disappointed because the book seemed to have so much potential, but fell flat in my opinion.

World War 2 is another era that I'm intensely interested in and have read many books on. Although this book was different, I didn't think it even held a candle to some of the other stories I have read. The writing was beautiful and some of the phrasing made me catch my breath, but I had a problem with the swearing, and I also found the death point of view annoying.

This was an incredible story that touched every emotional nerve in my body. I've always been very interested in the stories of the pioneers, especially the handcart companies. The author tells the story in a way that is very believable and very real. I liked how he made a point to describe the imperfection of our leaders. No one is perfect, we all make mistakes, and it is up to us to pray and find our own answers. My heart was almost pulled from it's chest at the tragedy and horror of the circumstances. I just can't even imagine.

This was an impulse buy at Costco. I loved the title and the blurb on the back cover drew me in. I was immediately impressed with the flowing and descriptive words. The author made everything absolutely beautiful and I loved the beauty of his descriptions. At times, it was a little superfluous but I was still impressed and touched. I absolutely loved this book for many reasons... the Indian legend (where the book gets it's name), the small town full of misfits, the underdog basketball team, and of course the pages and pages of basketball. I read some reviews that were negative because of all the descriptive basketball games, but I loved every single one. I think one has to play basketball to appreciate the description of a game. I don't think he could have taken any games out of the book and had it make the same effect. I connected with so many of the characters in Willow Creek. Being from a small town myself, I felt my heart being pulled from the very beginning. It was a wonderful read that left me inspired, uplifted, and happily content.

If you are not LDS, you would not understand this book at all.

I went through a Harlan Coben phase about 5 years ago, and read a lot of his books. I love the way he can wrap you into the story. My grandpa gave me a box of books and this one was in it. I remembered how much I liked the author, so I picked it up to read. It definitely didn't disappoint. It was intense and a page turner. It dealt with a lot of teenage problems that were scary. I know I'll be facing those with my own children, so I was very interested. This is definitely a book made for adults and not teens. I thought the technology use in it was interesting but not necessarily surprising. I had heard of it all before since I'm married to a technology geek.

(Don't worry, I do have human friends too) Most of the conclusions I jumped to ended up not being accurate which is a good thing, in this particular case. Although, I am starting to despise Fenoglio. Can't wait to find out what happens to him.

I'm excited to see what happens to all my favorite characters, and not so favorite characters in the 3rd and final book, Inkdeath.

I really liked the storyline and the little mystery woven throughout the romance, but I really did not like the main female character. Taylor really bugged me. I really did enjoy the romance though and the suspenseful chase up the mountain. I really appreciated the story written completely submerged in LDS life. It made me feel right at home.

I actually really, really liked this book, but there was a specific part that I thought was totally inappropriate for YA fiction. It was very nonchalant about sex. This bugged me a lot. I wouldn't want my daughters to read it and assume that it's the norm even though technically it is. The point is that it shouldn't be.

Besides that part in the book, I loved the story. I loved the idea of gracelings and their many different powers. The eye thing was pretty cool too. It was a fun, different twist that I hadn't read before. The main character was a bit too over the top, but I liked that she was able to grapple with herself and insecurities throughout the book and come out a better person. I can't recommend it for young adults, but I would recommend it to my older, married friends.

This book kept me on my toes from page one. I couldn't wait to read to the next page to find out what was happening. So much so that I stayed up until 3:00 a.m. one night and had to be up by 6:00 a.m. It was totally worth it! My heart was racing, my palms were sweaty... it really took me for a ride. I really like how the book was set in New York. Obviously not every Mormon lives in Utah, but sometimes it comes across as that way. This book helped broaden the horizons of LDS Fiction. I loved how the suspense kept building and building. At one point, I was extremely tempted to skip to the back of the book just to calm my nervousness... and I never cheat and read the ending... never. I can't wait to get my hands on some more Stephanie Black books to see if they are just as intense and thrilling. The book was nominated for the 2010 Whitney Awards and I know that at least one of her books has won a Whitney Award in the past.

I love these books so so much. Number nine proved to be just as thrilling and intense as books one through eight, if not more so. And I've finally figured out why I love these books so much. It's Halt... he is basically my dad. My dad taught me everything I know about nature and surviving in the wilderness. He knows everything about moving unseen, solving problems, and surviving in tough situations. And in my very vivid imagination, that must make me a girl version of Will. As long as John Flanagan keeps writing about Will, Halt, Horace, and friends I will keep reading about them. I hope he writes 100 books in this series. I love that they always get the bad guy. I love that everything always works out for the good. I love the dry humor (again, totally my dad). I love Tug. And I really love that in Halt's Peril, Will get Ebony. I didn't see that coming. Great series; the books just keep getting better and better.

This was my neighborhood bookclub's book for March. I have to admit that I wasn't super excited to read it, but that is the beauty of book club. You read things you normally wouldn't pick up. It was amazing. There were moments in the book, where I literally heard bells ringing... huge A-HA moments for me. I don't think it would have had such a profound effect on me had I not been going through a particularly hard trial. Everything fit so perfectly with what I am experiencing right now, and there was page after page of momentous break throughs for me. I only wish I had read the book 9 months ago when my "trial" first started.

This book was so helpful to me and I wholeheartedly recommend it to every woman out there. Everyone is experiencing some type of difficulty every single day and this book can really make a difference.

This book was way more suspenseful and action packed than I was originally thinking. I thought it would be a nice, light romance... but much to my surprise it had me biting my nails and gasping into the early hours of the morning. At one point, I felt so bad for Jay... it was one disaster after another for him, but sometimes that's really how life is, so it seemed very realistic. One thing I enjoyed immensely about it was that neither of the main characters were LDS, but the religion wasn't tossed in their halfheartedly. It seemed very well thought out and placed, just how you would find it in real life. It weaved a theme throughout, but wasn't the main star. I thought it was perfect the way the author included it. This was definitely a page turner!

Even though I'm a bit passed my teenage years (ha, ha) I still really enjoyed it, but it was definitely aimed at a teenage audience.

This novel was amazingly well written. It was obvious that the author put in a lot of time on research and historical facts. The story was riveting and addicting. I could not put it down. The main character, Marie, was intriguing and loveable. There was suspense, fear, and nail biting around every corner. The villain was not only evil, but incredibly scary and terrifying in the fact that he was so real. I can not wait to read the sequel.

I remember when the movie came out for this book, and I was so excited because I love Brenden Frasier. I went to see it in the theatre and really liked the movie... I don't know why I never thought to read the book before now. Too man other "to read" book on my list, I suppose.

I found the second book, Inkspell, at a thrift store for 50 cents so I bought it because I do that sort of thing. But then I couldn't read the second without reading the first book, so I borrowed it from the bookmobile, and it sat on my massive To Read book pile for weeks. The other day I was desperately searching for a way to put off cleaning and I rationalized to myself that I really need to take this book back to the bookmobile, so I'd better get it read.

I opened it up, and the magic began. I really really enjoyed the story. And because it was about crazy, book obsessed people, I loved it even more.

This would be the perfect book to read out loud with my children. Since we are in the midst of the Harry Potter series right now, I'm making a mental note that this will be next.

It had everything in it to be a great story, and now I'm anxious to watch the movie again. From what I remember of the movie, it followed the book fairly well. I love it when that happens.

How can you not love the Pioneer Woman? She makes me laugh, she makes me cry, she makes me happy to be alive. I'm so glad she had her love story published. When she was first posting excerpts on her blog, I was an avid reader. She is so open and honest and amazingly down to earth. Of course, since I am a country girl through and through, I loved everything about the book. Her little adventures on the ranch before marrying Marlboro Man had me cracking up long into the early morning hours. And her description of babies and motherhood always, always makes me run to my children and hold them in my arms and sniff their hair, and lament their growing up.

What pushes an 8 star rating to a 9 for me is wit. When the book is witty and funny, I die. I'm a sucker for great wit, and the pioneer woman definitely has that. Such a great book!

This book really surprised me. I opened it expecting to find a short, sweet, easy read... and maybe even a little peaceful story. Instead I was thrown in the rugged wilderness with danger, suspense, and action around every corner. The romance weaved throughout blended perfectly with the intense drama and suspense. I found it interesting to read about white supremists and bigotry. I don't think people realize that it is still very real and alive in our supposedly equal world. It made me a little sick to think people can take it that far, and yet I know there are extremes in everything.

The only thing I didn't like about the book is that the author kind of threw in the Mormon religion as an afterthought. It didn't flow with the story and it was only ever mentioned a few times and not at all in the context of the story. I think it could have easily been a great story with out the LDS reference. Or she could have written it in from the beginning instead of just suddenly inserting Mormon references sporadically.

I do recommend the story though, it was a page turner that I read well into the night.

I wish I could rate this book higher, I really do. The story was beautifully written, the depth of each character phenomenal. I loved so many things about it, BUT there were two F-words, and a handful of other swear words. When I read a young adult novel, I'm always asking myself if I would let my own children read it. Without the swear words, and a few complicated situations, a resounding yes, but as written, definitely not. And it wasn't just the swear words. There were other things in the book that I didn't approve of and wouldn't want my daughter (if she read it) to casually assume those kind of things are okay. The world is hard enough on a preteen or teen growing up, I don't know why we have to confuse them more about what's right and wrong.

This was a fun little read. It's a very short story in a series of "Shirley you can do it" books. It only took me about an hour to read. I love these short, uplifting stories. Not only are they an inspiration for me to become a better person, it's fun to envision other women running around just as crazily as I am, trying to accomplish all the tasks of a mother, a wife, a friend, a neighbor, etc.

Summary:

With three kids, a husband, a business, and a never-ending pile of dirty dishes, Shirley rarely if ever feels adequate. I really enjoyed the drama in this book. Sometime I just need to read a book with lots of drama and intense situations. This totally filled the need. I liked that the story took place in a different country and culture. I used to have a negative attitude about LDS Fiction. I thought it was too cheesy. But Annette Lyon and Shannon Hale have changed my mind. Surprisingly I would much rather read an LDS Fiction book than anything else. It's relevant to me and my lifestyle, and I find so much of myself in the characters and situations. I'm disappointed that it took me so long to discover. But now I have a plethora of great LDS fiction books to devour.

I've been on a mission to read all of Annette Lyon's books. I've almost accomplished my mission, so I wish she would hurry up and write some more. ha, ha

At the Journey's End is a historical romance. It is filled with love, sacrifice, loss, and adventure. I love reading about the 19th century early Saints. This book really made me ponder about all they had to sacrifice, and all that they didn't have. I love books that make me remember to be more thankful for what I have. In House on the Hill, Abraham Franklin really grew on me, so I was very pleased to read about his story and happy ending. Of course, I loved Maddie and was immediately rooting for her. The best stories really do have a happy ending. No one can convince me otherwise.

I had a few misgivings before starting this book because I had heard unpleasant reviews, but I've loved all of Shannon Hale's work so I wanted to judge for myself. I started it at 10:00 p.m., read until 1:00 a.m. and then woke up and finished reading it. The storyline was absolutely addicting. I had to know what was happening, what was going to happen, think about what had happened.

There were so many things I related to in the book... so many times I exclaimed, "That's so me!". There were so many times I laughed out loud and not just a wimpy, "ha, ha", but a real hearty laugh out loud. It was amusing, it was witty, it was clever, it was witty, it was heart wrenching, and did I mention it was witty? I absolutely loved the flow of the story... the flow of the writing... it was perfect. The time passed in the book just as time does in real life. All of a sudden you're 40 with 3 teenagers, and I could actually feel myself at that stage, panicking a little. It was like a swift kick in the butt to just enjoy the precious time I have with my children and love every second of it. There were a lot of similarities between me and Becky, and I think that's why I couldn't put it down.

I'm not condoning a close friendship with a male while you're happily married, but I really enjoyed the story.... as just that, a witty, charming, well written story.

To gather the stories, StoryCorps provides a facility, recording equipment and a facilitator, then waits for people to invite loved ones, friends, and grandparents to sit down for a 40-minute session. A copy of the tape is filed in the Library of Congress, and parts have aired on NPR. Isay says, "I realized how many people among us feel completely invisible, believe their lives don't matter, and fear they'll someday be forgotten."

The stories were so raw and emotional, but most of all real. Many times I was overcome with gratitude for my own life and awe at other's stories and what they had been through. Not only was the book inspiring and heartfelt, it made me want to go record my mom and dads stories and grandparents and anyone else I could think of. Real life stories are so much better than fiction.

Gregor and the Code of the Claw (Underland Chronicles, Book 5) by Suzanne Collins

This was the last book of the Underland Chronicles. I have enjoyed the series so much, and was anxiously anticipating the final book. I was quite taken aback at how similar the last book of this series is to the last book of The Hunger Games series which is also by Suzanne Collins. I was sorely disappointed in the final book. Too much sadness, too much blood, too much violence, and not a "happily ever after" ending. I was so upset with Mockingjay, and now I can see that her first series, The Underland Chronicles, was the first to follow the pattern.

All in all, I really enjoyed the series, and even the final book... until the very end. I just need that happily ever after when I'm reading and when it doesn't happen, I just can't stand it.

I'll have to remember if Suzanne Collins writes another series to not read the final book. ;)

I keep waiting for the series to get old and predictable, and yet somehow each book provides such an excellent story that I put off cleaning, cooking, and all other responsibilities until I have finished devouring the book. And so the story continues in Book 8 with Will, Halt, Horace, and other beloved characters.

The Kings of Clonmel may have been predictable at times, but soothingly so. I really enjoy the way the author writes with such attention to detail, especially that of clothes, weapons, food, and general descriptions of every day life. You wouldn't think it would be important, but it adds a whole new dimension to the story.

All I have to say is that they better be making a movie of the series and it better be good.

The story continues with Gregor, boots, and all of their Underland friends and foes. I enjoyed the twist at the end of this book. They don't realize they are on a quest until they figure it out at the end. I have formed an odd attachment to Ripred and the Nibblers. This book was the perfect book for me to read after I finished and intense, heavy fantasy book. I wanted something light and easy, but good, and this filled that order nicely. I came away feeling content, happy, and a little anxious to find out what happens in the final installment of the Underland Chronicles.

I am normally not a hard core fantasy reader. The stories become too intense and too gruesome for me usually. My sister highly recommended this series to me so I decided to take the plunge. It is an 800 + page book. I wasn't sure how far I would make it through the book, but I was pleasantly surprised to be drawn into the book on page 1. I enjoyed the tangle of worlds and people, and the weaving of different stories on top of the main story. Richard, the hero, is everything you could want in a hero. And Kahlan was so mysterious from the very beginning that it drove me mad trying to figure out who and what she was. The author doesn't reveal everything about her until well past page 500. I thought that was an intelligent and clever ploy for the book. I was only disappointed toward the end of the book, when it got violent and a little PG-13 ish. I thought it was a wonderful story full of truth and love with adventure and intrigue on every page. However, I have to make a disclaimer about the content toward the end of the book. It's definitely for adults.

It took me a little while to get around to reading book 3 of the Underland Chronicles, but that is definitely not because of any shortcomings of the series. I was most anxious to assume the series and discover how Gregor and Boots were doing. What I love about this series, is that the author is complete genius about the exclamations and phrases that come out of both Gregor and Boots mouth. I especially get a kick out of the 2 year old Boots antics. It's absolutely spot on to a real 2 year old. She has a way of making you feel like you are in the story and talking to these kids and creatures face to face. It is a wonderful precursor to The Hunger Games series, and since I read that series first, I can totally see where her genius comes from. I have nothing but praise for Gregor the Overlander and the Underland series in general.

In book 3, I really enjoyed the introduction of some new characters and creatures. I could picture clearly in my mind the creepy, steaming jungle and the terrifying cutters. This is a perfect series for ages 9 - 12, and anyone who loves a good, easy read full of fun and adventure.

I loved the first book so much, that I was very excited to already own the second book and not have to run out and buy it or wait for someone to post it on paperbackswap.com. I dug right into it and was immediately satisfied with the continuation of the story. The circle of unlikely hero's grew tighter and stronger as they endured training and trials. The first book has little Christian references and undertone, however, the second book delves more into the Christian book realm. I honestly thought that it might end up being too much and overpowering the already intense storyline, but I have to say that I applaud the authors for making it work. I heartily recommend it for preteens and teens. It's wonderful that we can still have books like this among all the crap out there for kids. This book emphasizes the importance of God in our lives, and in just doing good to your fellowman. It was good, wholesome, clean, and an amazing story. I really hope the 3rd book will get enough funding to be written.

This book was a surprising read. I had been given a copy of the second book to review, and I knew I didn't want to read the second book before the first, so I ordered this book off of Amazon hoping it would be worth it. And it was!! I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the book and started reading. It held my attention from the first chapter. Although it is written specifically for tweens and teens, I enjoyed the characters and the storyline immensely. I couldn't wait to find out what happened to each of the main characters. I highly recommend this book for young adults. It has a lot of insight and encouragement for that age group.

I had heard only great things about this book, so I decided to read it myself. The author's journey of self discovery and self healing was moving to read about. I really enjoyed all of the people she came across and ended up helping in some way or another, and in turn, having them help her. Although I enjoy reading about different religions and ways of explaining unexplainable things, I did not necessarily agree with her about a lot of things. For me, it was more of an interesting read, than a motivation to discover spirituality. I admire the author's courage for sharing her deep pain and the raw emotion that was so often exposed. When I finished the book, I did feel different and changed. I don't think there's any way of getting around that. Her personal discovery has an effect on anyone who reads the book.

I am still completely enraptured with this delightful series. Every book has such a wonderful storyline and such well developed characters. Book 7 was no exception. I really enjoyed the idea of stepping out of line with this book. Instead of seeing young Will off on another adventure, we step back in time just a little before Will becomes a full fledged Ranger. The desert setting was very appealing to me. I really enjoyed reading about the desert people and the adventure of Halt, Will, and the other well loved characters. I was especially happy to see Princess Cassandra back on another adventure. I have yet to be even slightly disappointed with a book in this series even in the slightest.

I am looking forward to the next books.

I never would have picked up this book on my own, but I was surprisingly caught up in the story. This was my book club's recent pick, and I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. The story is a twisted tale of a modern day couple falling out of love and indulging in selfish habits and temptations. It is intertwined with the main character's ancestor that followed the Oregan trail in the early day of America. I especially loved the ancestor's story and all that she had to endure. I wish the book had been mostly about her.

Through the many twists and turns in the story, the main character reaches a breaking point in which she finds God and, in turn, peace. Finding peace and understanding is the thread that holds the two stories together.

It was wonderfully written with lots to think about and ponder upon. I believe I came away from the book a better person, and hoping to achieve greater peace in my own life.

The Peace Giver provides wonderful insight to the atonement and how to apply it to our lives. It is told as a parable which is the one thing I didn't like about it. I felt that the story line was hard to read and distracted me from the magnificent message inside. The message itself was very inspiring and life changing. If each of us were able to love as the Saviour did, we could not be unhappy. I loved that the story and message is something I can ponder and try to incorporate into my own life.

Book six turned out to be my favorite of the series. I know I keep repeating myself with this series, but that's what makes the books so terrific. Not only were new, loveable and heroic characters introduced in book six, but old characters that I was fond of came to visit also. I loved the whole plot line of the book, and the many twists and turns the story had to take before coming to a head in the last few chapters. Two thumbs way up for me!
